Japanese Personal Handy Phone (PHS) network operator Willcom has selected Alcatel-Lucent’s next-generation IP service router equipment to build a new wireless IP network. According to a press release, the Alcatel-Lucent service routers will enable Willcom to support increased traffic growth and new advanced service features required for the planned commercial launch of next-generation wireless services, based on the eXtended Global Platform (XGP) in October 2009. XGP is a wireless broadband communications system based on current PHS technology with additional advanced technologies such as OFDM and MIMO.
