Nokia Siemens (News - Alert) Networks (NSN) has announced that the company made more shipments of WCDMA/HSPA in the first nine months of 2008 than the whole year of 2007.
At present, the company is supplying wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA)/high speed packet access (HSPA) networks to over 130 paying customers. According to NSN, it’s currently delivering WCDMA/HSPA to 18 of the 25 prominent 3G operators in the world.
The company claimed that it has supplied nearly half of all currently live HSPA networks. Additionally, the company said that it has delivered more than 200,000 GSM radio transceiver units in July 2008 alone.
“Nokia Siemens Networks (News - Alert) radio access business is driven by the strong ambition to become the undisputed number one radio access vendor,” said Marc Rouanne, head of Radio Access business at NSN.
NSN credits the success of its GSM and 3G solutions to environmental credentials of its Flexi Base Station. Currently, NSN “green” Flexi Base Station provides over 200 mobile operators with base station site energy savings of up to 70 percent when compared to competing products.
The design of Flexi Base Station reduces the environmental impact over its whole life cycle. Also, over 90 percent of its materials, according to NSN, are suitable for recycling.
The company is aiming to further reduce the energy consumption of its radio network products. By 2011, the company said it expects to power the base stations deployed at remote locations, without access to grid power, from renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind-power.
NSN plays a key role in the research activities as well as in the 3GPP standardization work, which is laying the foundation for the future of wireless communications.
Recently, NSN inaugurated a new facility for the manufacture and distribution of mobile communications infrastructure at Oragadam near Chennai (India). Over the next three years, the company said it plans to invest INR 300 Crore -approximately USD 70 million in the facility and to generate 400 new jobs.
