Fujitsu Wins LTE Supply Contract from Japan's DoCoMo
Updated:2008/9/27 10:50
Fujitsu has been selected by Japan's NTT DoCoMo to be a supplier of core network systems for the carrier's next-generation Super 3G - LTE based - network. Fujitsu will supply components of the core network system Evolved Packet Core (EPC), comprised of S-GW systems, which handle data transmissions with mobile phone handsets, and P-GW systems, which connect the core network to corporate and other external networks. In 2006, NTT DoCoMo selected Fujitsu to develop and manufacture both wireless base stations and handsets for its Super 3G network, which is based on the emerging Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard designed to enable high-speed transmission of large volumes of data. Leveraging Fujitsu's IP technologies and switching technologies for base stations, the S-GW and P-GW systems integrate the hardware and software being deployed by Nokia Siemens Networks. Earlier this month, NEC also won a contract from DoCoMo for the core network system, the Evolved Packet Core (EPC). NEC had already been selected as a Super 3G wireless base station and terminal provider The EPC is composed of the following three systems. “Mobility Management Entity” system to register Super 3G device positions, process incoming device calls and coordinate handover between wireless base stations. “Serving Gateway” for processing data related to voice and packets for 3G and Super 3G systems. “PDN Gateway” for interfacing with EPC, IMS and/or external packet networks.
