Nokia Siemens Networks challenges current FTTH solutions
Updated:2008/9/26 10:53
Promotes VDSL2 technology as best migration path to next generation access networks Espoo, Finland – September 25, 2008 - Nokia Siemens Networks is to introduce a range of access solutions that offer operators a genuine cost effective alternative to fiber to the home networks. The company is to launch a package of new hardware and software solutions based on DSL technology at Broadband World Forum Europe, held in Brussels September 29 –October 2, including new features that will enable operators to offer IPTV of unprecedented quality. Specifically designed for fiber-to-the-building applications, one of the new solutions is based on VDSL2 - the most advanced technology in the DSL family – and allows operators to offer up to 100 Mbps bandwidth. With that capacity operators will be able to satisfy end users’ increasing appetite for multimedia applications for the next few years, without having to move away from the DSL technology, as they would have to do with the fiber-to-the-home solutions currently on the market. The fact that VDSL requires operators to transfer technologies only once - from DSL to the future next generation optical access networks - makes it the most economically viable migration available. This VDSL service has sufficient capacity for end users to watch multiple High Definition TV streams per subscriber line while using an Internet connection with fast symmetric speeds up- and down-stream speeds. The solution is powered by a new, small and easy to install DSLAM (digital subscriber line access multiplexer). “The traffic in networks will continue its rapid growth and VDSL2 capacity can satisfy this need for the next few years,” says Martin Lüst, Head of Broadband Access business unit, Nokia Siemens Networks. “It provides a smooth, cost-effective and high quality migration path to the passive optical fibre access technology that will eventually dominate the network.” Further completing the Nokia Siemens Networks access network portfolio, two additional solutions for fiber-to-the-curb or building applications are introduced based upon the established and widely used DSLAM product family. All DSL solutions feature a new software package, Quality TV, which takes IPTV to a whole new level of performance. Applicable for new and existing VDSL2 and ADSL2+ deployments, this innovative software solution lets end users enjoy IPTV with high quality and minimized loss of data packages.
