Ericsson has announced the expansion of its TV offering with IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) integrated IPTV middleware. The company's open, standards-based, end-to-end IPTV solution delivers vendor choice for operators.

Ericsson's new IPTV middleware solution gives operators the flexibility and scalability they need to create, trial and deploy an interactive TV experience to their subscribers. In addition, it also provides a complete TV package that includes interactive, mobile and on-demand functionality.
 
Eric Cooney, head of TV Solutions at Ericsson, said that the new IPTV middleware has been designed in line with open standards so that it can fully interoperate with third-party suppliers.
 
According to Cooney, this means that as a prime integrator, the company can offer customers a choice of best-in-class, fully-tested products, as part of a pre-integrated end-to-end system.
 
Ericsson IPTV solution, an open, carrier-class solution, is designed to drive the future of converged and blended communications and entertainment services, according to company officials. Aligned with the Open IPTV Forum specifications, the end-to-end IPTV solution is the first to be pre-integrated with IMS.
 
IMS is an architectural framework for delivering Internet Protocol (IP) multimedia to mobile users.
 
Prominent TV technology providers have integrated their consumer devices, content protection solutions, video servers and applications software with this new solution.
 
The IPTV solution brings together company’s solutions—new IMS-enabled IPTV middleware, IPTV network infrastructure video processing solutions and video-on-demand technologies—with interoperable third-party products from TV players.
 
These TV players include Accedo Broadband, Agama Technologies, Amino, HP, SecureMedia, Sun Microsystem, Tilgin (News - Alert), Verimatrix, and ZyXEL.
 
Cooney explained that his company has combined its network solutions, digital television solutions, consulting and systems integration capabilities, with key industry partners, to launch an industry-shaping TV platform that delivers on the vision of the Individual TV Experience.
 
“Our focus is on enabling operators to differentiate their TV offerings and offer innovative services that attract, retain and excite the consumer,” added Cooney.
 
Earlier this month, Ericsson announced that it has signed the largest single contract in Vietnam, amounting to $450 million, to develop and modernize Hanoi Telecom's nationwide mobile network.
 
The strategic partnership, a first in Vietnam, will also see Ericsson managing and operating the network under a full-scope managed services contract.
