Motorola aims for big revival
Updated:2008/8/21 11:43
Motorola has vowed to make a comeback to second place again in the Thai mobile handset market under a new country manager. ''Our goal is to win the right market by the right product,'' said Patrick Aronson, the new country manager of Motorola Thailand, who succeeded Chananyarak Phetcharat in July. Mr Aronson admitted that Motorola faced a market share decline in Thailand in past years, saying the company had neither the right products nor the right customer experience to address local demand. ''Even though we have good-looking phones, our software didn't deliver high performance in some functions, multimedia and memory.'' However, Motorola has made improvements and aims to become a top-two leader in the local market. The US-based handset maker is ranked No. 3 in the global mobile phone market and No. 1 in the United States. In Thailand, Nokia commands a share of more than 60% in the local handset market, followed by Samart's i-Mobile brand with a 28% share. Motorola did not report sales revenue and market share for its Thai operating unit. Mr Aronson said Motorola would focus on third-generation (3G) phones and networks as well as distribution channels. Half of the new models to be introduced in the Thai market next year are slated for 3G phones. The company planned to develop software and chipset platforms and increase storage capacity to provide more multimedia features and functions with faster speed to become more user-friendly. Motorola's key product segments include first-tier phones, iconic music multimedia handsets and productivity phones. Its business strategy involves competitive pricing, proper distribution, stylish designs and a rich customer experience. Mr Aronson also said the ultimate objective of Motorola is not only to increase revenue and market share, but also to grow the business and brand, increasing profit for its partners.
