Just how is Cisco competing with Microsoft, Google?

Updated:2008/8/13 14:57

Cisco CEO John Chambers never misses an opportunity to talk "collaboration" but collaboration is much more than networking - it's a lot to do with collaboration software. Om Malik, writing in GigaOm points out that with enterprises giving Google's Google Apps the thumbs-up and Microsoft pushing the collaboration elements of SharePoint, Cisco needs to think like a software company if it wants to take some of the collaboration mindshare. It's been more than a year since Cisco bought WebEx and last year it acquired a range of social networking interests. But we've yet to Cisco's overarchiing collaboration/social networking strategy. What's the hold up?

Cisco's software innovations will take time, but...

Cisco is already moving in the right direction. Not only thinking like a software company, but acting on it, acquiring the leader in home networking software - Pure Networks less than one month ago.

In this thread Habib Ullah Khan made the comment, "I think Cisco has plans for cloud computing and delivering Applications through it. This battle will come and its a long time planning" -- and I think he has the right idea. Taking into account that innovation takes planning (time) is a very necessary component, something Cisco has been doing for some time now too. Rarely do innovative ideas and technologies occur over night, but knowing Cisco is moving in the right direction at about the right time is a good thing.
