Qualcomm, HuaQin Ink CDMA2000 License Deal

Updated:2008/8/8 11:18

Qualcomm and Shanghai-based HuaQin Telecom Technology announced Tuesday a subscriber unit license agreement.

Terms of the deal call on San Diego-based Qualcomm to grant HuaQin — a technology company specializing in mobile products — a worldwide license under its patent portfolio. HuaQin will pay standard-rate royalties to Qualcomm.

The worldwide license enable the Chinese company to develop, manufacture, and sell CDMA2000 subscriber units and modem cards, including Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Assemblies, for sale to other device suppliers.

First developed for commercial use by Qualcomm, Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is an airlink technology designed to send voice and data transmission between mobile devices and cell sites. CDMA2000 is a new generation of CDMA, featuring greater user capacity and increased data transmission speeds. The latest version of CDMA2000 technology is EV-DO, with the most recent variations called EV-DO REVision A and REVision B.

According to a report published by CDMA Development Group (CDG), the demand for CDMA wireless service grew in China by almost 20 percent last year.

Marvin Blecker, president at Qualcomm Technology Licensing, noted that the development of CDMA wireless industry in China is providing a “great deal” of growth opportunities for local companies and operators.

“This license agreement with HuaQin, a Chinese company founded in June 2005 and dedicated to research and development of telecom products, will enable them to introduce advanced 3G CDMA2000 products into the growing CDMA market in China,” Blecker said.

“The license from Qualcomm, a company known for its continuous innovation and support for the wireless industry, will allow us to offer our customers devices with increased capabilities and high data rates while bringing down consumer prices,” said Wensheng Qiu, president at HuaQin, in a statement.

Qualcomm is a developer of advanced wireless technologies and data solutions based on CDMA and other advanced technologies.

Also this week, Qualcomm announced that its subsidiary MediaFLO USA and ESPN will bring racing fans the excitement of NASCAR live to mobile phones, starting later this month.

The MediaFLO USA mobile TV service is available to AT&T subscribers (AT&T Mobile TV with FLO) and to Verizon Wireless customers (V CAST Mobile TV).
