Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications networks for operators worldwide, has entered into an agreement with Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to build a full-fledged GSM laboratory and training center, said industry sources.

Under the agreement, Huawei will donate GSM equipments worth US$3 million to BUET, according to Zhang Hui, chief representative of Huawei in Bangladesh.

Provision of the equipment is being viewed as part of Huawei's corporate social responsibilities (CSR).

Huawei is the first company to cooperate with BUET, said Education Adviser Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman. He thanked Huawei for its generous help to BUET and believed the new laboratory and training center will help Bangladesh train technically sound telecom experts.

Huawei has become the top telecom solutions provider in Bangladesh. The most important thing was that it set up a good example fulfilling its CSR, which is expected to contribute to deeper relations between the two countries, said Wang Yu, an official of Chinese Embassy.

In December 2007, Huawei Technologies (Bangladesh) Co. Ltd. donated data communication equipment worth Tk 5 crore to BUET.

Huawei set foot in Bangladesh market in 1998 and already employs more than 800 people, of which 700 are local people while about 200 are graduates from BUET.
