An Alameda, California company that specializes in IP-based networking solutions announced today that it’s signed a contract to help deploy more solutions from an IPTV operator in India.

Officials from UTStarcom (News - Alert) Inc. say their deal with Gurgaon-based Aksh Optifibre Ltd. is designed to expand the operator’s “RollingStream” IPTV solution.

UTStarcom’s vice president and managing director of South Asia operations, Vijay Yadav, said the IPTV (News - Alert) market is growing in India and that his company is looking to give Aksh a competitive advantage.

“UTStarcom’s relationship with Aksh will assist the operator in bringing more IPTV-based services to its customers, increasing revenue opportunities and maintaining its leadership position in India,” Yadav said.

Aksh officials describe their company as one of India’s leading optical fiber cable manufacturers and one of the first companies in India to set up its own fiber optic manufacturing units.

The RollingStream IPTV system supports more than 850,000 live IPTV subscribers around the world, Aksh officials say. The system maintains 2.5 million in China with China Netcom (News - Alert) and China Telecom, in India with Bharti Airtel, MTNL/Aksh and United Telecoms Limited, in Sri Lanka with SLT, in Japan with Softbank, in Latin America with Brasil Telecom (News - Alert), in Taiwan with Markwell and in Europe with Jersey Telecom, company officials say.

The company’s manager director, Kailash S. Choudhari, said UTStarcom’s RollingStream IPTV solution is a completely IP-based platform that will improve delivery of interactive entertainment services.

“Innovation brings progress and Aksh understands the importance of maintaining cutting-edge technology as India embarks on pivotal IPTV growth,” Choudhari said. “Our relationship with UTStarcom to bring the first IPTV service to India led that innovation, and now we are hoping to bring those high-quality entertainment services to more subscribers.”

The two companies have a history. Last year, Aksh selected UTStarcom to deliver a commercial IPTV service, according to the companies. In March, Aksh launched IPTV and VoIP services on a telephone network in Delhi, company officials say.

UTStarcom officials say the company earned recognition recently two awards for its IPTV and broadband work and advancement in India. VARIndia named UTStarcom this year’s “Most Trusted Company” in India in the areas of broadband and IPTV leadership, according to the company. UTStarcom also received an “Excellence in Telecom Services and Solutions” award from the Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association in India for the company’s innovation in IPTV, broadband and NGN and its direct impact on India’s telecom market growth, company officials say.
