Alcatel-Lucent announced today that they’ve launched the emerald isle’s first WiMax Rev-e network service.

The project is funded by the Centre for Telecommunications Value Chain Research, officials say. Through its collaboration with Bell Labs Ireland, based in Blanchardstown, Alcatel-Lucent says it also fosters a close connection with the Irish academic community.

NUI Maynooth says it received a turnkey infrastructure solution from Alcatel-Lucent for this project, which includes WiMax Rev-e radio access, wireless access controllers, base stations, and an operation and maintenance center.

The solution, officials say, also includes services including network planning and engineering, deployment, integration optimization and maintenance. For Alcatel-Lucent, this project highlights the company’s continued leadership in the introduction of enhanced next-generation communications solutions, according to the company. Officials say it shows the power of WiMax technology as it can easily fulfill various business needs.

With the help of Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMax solution, NUI Maynooth’s staff 6,000 students and other Irish researchers will benefit from “always-on” broadband services.

This includes fast downloads of very large files as well as video-conferencing, VoIP services and new, mobile high-speed data services such as DVD-quality streaming video. Even if the students are located as far as 20 kilometers from the site, they can still have remote access to the university network, thanks to WiMax. This lets the students and academic staff to exchange data or multimedia files as if they were on the campus and access sophisticated mainframe computing power available at NUI Maynooth, according to the company.

“We are very excited about the possibilities that WiMax offers everyone at the university; fast voice, video and data transport will greatly facilitate knowledge transfer and resource sharing,” said Ronan Farrell, Director of the Institute of Microelectronics and Wireless Systems at NUI Maynooth. “Thanks to Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMax solution we will benefit from innovative and full mobile high-speed campus wide communications. The WiMax network is also a great opportunity for developing our research activities on mobile and wireless technologies and applications”.
