Cisco, one of the world's biggest technology groups, yesterday announced the appointment of Donald McLaughlin to lead the company in Scotland.

McLaughlin, 43, replaces Gordon Thomson, and will take on his new role at the beginning of the company's new financial year on July 28.

Meanwhile, Thomson will move from his current position as the US tech giant's operations director for Scotland and Ireland, to director of sales strategy and planning in the firm's worldwide sales strategy and planning unit.

advertisementCisco said that because of its "Star Trek-like" technology, Thomson will continue to live in Scotland but will be able to collaborate with stakeholders, customers and company managers across the world.

McLaughlin, who has 20 years' experience in the technology industry, joined Cisco in 1999 as an account manager in software sales.

He said: "As a Scot myself, I'm delighted to take on this role. Cisco's business in Scotland has grown massively and I am looking forward to building on this success".

Cisco, which makes much of the infrastructure for the internet and has its Scottish headquarters near Hamilton, employs more than 300 staff north of the border.
