Telecommunications equipment manufacturer Nortel Networks on Tuesday said it is terminating its business operations in Calgary, Canada by 2009, in line with its restructuring plan announced in February to concentrate its operations in fewer cities.

The Calgary campus, which is located on 59 acres in the city''s northeast, will be completely shut down in 2009.

The company spokesperson Mohammed Nakhooda did not disclose on the number of employees that will be axed under the closure plans, which has a current work force of over 400 at the Westwinds Innovation Centre.

“Unfortunately, some people will be losing their jobs,” he said. “Many will also be relocated, and many will be tele-work or home-based.”

The company in February had announced that it would axe a total of 2,100 jobs and transfer 1,000 others to lower-cost countries. Nortel’s Canadian operations are to be concentrated mostly in Toronto and Ottawa.
