Nokia Siemens Networks is currently in talks with Taiwan network-equipment makers, including Gemtek Technology and Accton Technology, for possible joint production of femtocell base stations as the company is stepping up its cooperation with telecom operators worldwide in the FMC (fixed mobile convergence) segment, according to Mike Wang, General Manager for Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau, Nokia Siemens Networks.

Nokia Siemens Networks is already cooperating with a number of companies including Thomson, Airvana, Ubiquisys, Radioframe and Netgear, according to sources at Nokia Siemens Taiwan.

In order to quickly bring down the cost of femtocell base stations, Nokia Siemens has decided to seek joint production with Taiwan-based makers, Wang said. The unit price of femtocell base stations currently hovers around US$250.

When the unit price is reduced to around US$100, telecom operators will be able to offer the devices to clients, encouraging them to use mobile phones at home through the base stations instead of using VoIP, Wang said.
