Chinese Companies Lead 5G Transport Network Standard Research

Updated:2017/7/11 16:13

ZTE Corporation (0763.HK / 000063.SZ), a major international provider of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet, today announced that together with China Mobile, China Unicom, Fiberhome, China Information & Communication Research Institute and other Chinese enterprises, it submitted several 5G transport proposals in the International Telecommunication Union 15 Study Group (ITU-T SG15) plenary session held in Geneva, Switzerland, promoting the research of 5G transport standards. In the session, experts thought that transport network support of 5G requirements is an important new topic, and the "Transport network support of IMT-2020/5G" technical report project initiation and 5G transport standard research programme were finally passed in the summary conference on June 30th. It is a key step for ITU-T in 5G transport standard research, and a major contribution by Chinese enterprises to promote 5G transport standard research.

The transport will initially go into 5G commercial applications. With in-depth development of 5G wireless standards, research for the 5G transport standard is also imminent. Currently, ITU-T SG15 has not yet carried out relevant standard work. 5G transport proposals submitted in the meeting indicate that it is necessary to carry out new 5G transport network standard work. Chinese enterprises have a keen vision and strong R&D strength, so they are beginning to lead the world in research for the 5G transport standard.

In the ITU-T SG15 plenary session, China Mobile put up the 5G transport network requirement proposal which systematically gives basic requirements of 5G transport network for the first time in the industry. Meanwhile, China Mobile submitted 5G transport network architecture requirement analysis and 5G transport network standardization target analysis to determine 5G transport network architecture and key technologies, laying the foundation for 5G transport standard research. ZTE proposes the FlexE-based (Flexible Ethernet) layer network model architecture. It extends the FlexE technology, which is currently limited to links, to a FlexE Tunnel network technology, and defines the FlexE channel layer, FlexE section Layer, cross connection, protection and OAM.

At the Mobile World Congress 2017 (Shanghai) held on June 29th, ZTE and Fiberhome released 5G transport network products Flexhaul series and Fithaul series respectively to support ultra-low latency, network slicing and other new functions, indicating that the industry has formed a consensus on 5G transport network architecture. Test results of ZTE's Flexhaul equipment show that failure switching time is less than 1ms, single node forwarding latency is less than 500ns and multiservice physical isolation is supported, meeting 5G service requirements for ultra-high reliability, ultra-low latency and network slicing.
