ZTE Big Video Experience Enhancement Path

Updated:2017/7/7 10:21

User experience is the core requirement of video services, so diversified high-quality service experience is the core competitiveness of video solutions. After 12 years of development, ZTE has become a global major end-to-end video product solution provider with plentiful experience in key technologies and solutions for promoting Big Video user experience. ZTE offers superb video experience by engaging network, key technologies, service innovation, and V-QoE.

Premium Big Video Bearing Network

Superb video experience should be guaranteed by the premium video network to meet the demanding requirements of the Big Video service for network QoS and QoE. Therefore, the Big Video bearing network should feature high bandwidth, low latency, and low packet loss rate. It should support fixed-mobile convergence for seamless service experience, meet the requirement for the future network with SDN/NFV architecture, and realize flexible resource dispatching across the entire network. ZTE provides a premium cable video network, a premium wireless video network, and a premium CDN network solution that feature ultra-high bandwidth, low latency, and high QoS to help operators cope with the impact of traffic data in the Big Video era, reconstruct their networks, and build a video network that satisfies the requirements for Big Video.

Key Technologies for User Experience Enhancement

To provide high-quality video experience, ZTE has been making technological breakthroughs in key technologies, such as network packet loss, latency and jittering, fast startup, and live broadcast latency.

- Network Flux Improvement by TCP Acceleration

Traditional TCP is sensitive to network latency and packet loss. Occasional packet loss in the network is regarded as a congestion, and triggers TCP slow-start and congestion avoidance that will cause throughput reduction and low bandwidth utilization, greatly weakening user experience. The ZTE Big Video system, through bilateral/unilateral TCP optimization, promotes the network flux of video services. The TCP acceleration algorithm is used to boost network throughput, improve bandwidth utilization, and promote user experience, thus deferring network expansion and reducing expansion cost.

FCC

Fast Channel Change (FCC) is a method in which the FCC server delivers customized unicast program traffic starting with the key frame to shorten the channel change time. Without the time of waiting for the key frame and interconnecting with IGMP, FCC can accelerate key frame transmission and improve the channel change speed so that users basically feel no latency caused by channel change. After the FCC technology is used, the channel change time is less than 0.5s, so user experience is significantly enhanced.

- ARQ

Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) is used to restore incorrect packets in the way that the receiver requests the sender to retransmit the messages. The receiver needs to find out the position where an error occurs and request a retransmission. Because packet loss does not occur frequently, the retransmitted packets can be received by the STB, realizing compensation for packet loss. When the packet loss rate reaches 2% in the network, 5% of redundant packets are retransmitted, so users do not feel the impact of network packet loss.

- FEC

When a message is sent, redundant data is generated through the specially-designed algorithms and transmitted with the original message. Even if some packets of the original message are lost during the transmission process, the receiver can restore the lost packets through computing based on the remaining packets and redundant data. With the Forward Error Correction (FEC) technology, it is unnecessary anymore to notify the sender of a retransmission. Therefore, FEC is particularly applicable to real-time media transmission.

Service Innovation

To improve video experience, service is the core. ZTE, through constant service innovation, brings rich new video services for users.

- Ultra HD Experience

ZTE's Big Video products are leading the industry, and ZTE is the first to launch services such as 4K live broadcast. As the immersive VR is more widely recognized, ZTE offers Big Video products that can realize 360° panoramic live VR broadcast with the help of VR glasses, G-sensors, and gyroscopes, to make interaction between people and the TV friendlier.

- Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC)

In the mobile network, video traffic occupies over 70% of mobile data. Extending traditional video services from the wired network to the wireless network and providing high-quality video services for mobile users are important profit sources of the future mobile market.

- Personalized Services

With the ZTE Big Video service solution, users can change the video presence page style to meet their personalized demands.

- Big Data-based Smart Recommendation

The ZTE Big Video solution, which is based on the big data platform and combined with user behaviors, makes in-depth mining and analysis of user information such as user preferences and activeness to generate user profiles. Based on user profiles, it provides elaborate smart value-added services such as smart search, personalized recommendation, personalized advertising, and personalized store. Using the "5W+1H" standard (Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How), it provides users with personalized experience and services, realizes integration of different services, and enhances user stickiness. The system uses the big data technology to make in-depth mining of services to know what services are preferred and what kind of content orchestration is more accepted by users. Such information is analyzed and displayed in reports to provide guidance for operators on how to make product design and integration, and for CPs on how to release suitable contents and services (see Figure 1).

V-QoE

The V-QoE video experience evaluation system, designed by ZTE, makes overall evaluation of video experience in terms of content experience, interaction experience, and viewing experience. Based on the V-QoE system, the operator can build an FMC video service end-to-end O&M system to know user video experience in a comprehensive, accurate and timely manner, realize rapid delimitation and location of faults, and provide excellent video service assurance (see Figure 2).

Both interaction experience and viewing experience independently affects the experience of end users.

The V-QoE system covers the end-to-end process of video services, making comprehensive evaluation of content source quality, network transmission quality, service platform, and terminals. Its advantages include:

1) Comprehensive evaluation: close to user's true feelings

2) High scalability: applicable to 4K, 8K, and VR/AR services

As the core user requirement for video services, superb video experience is guaranteed in terms of content experience, interaction experience, and viewing experience. The ZTE Big Video solution, which combines the four Big Video connotations of big content, big network, big data, and big ecosystem, helps operators build a premium FMC network with superb user experience, establish an open video platform that integrates a wide range of contents, services, and third-party applications, provide a comprehensive V-QoE video experience evaluation system, to enhance big video user experience.
