1. DCI Service Development Trend and Requirements

With the rapid development of the Internet, Internet of Things (IoT), 4K video, and cloud computing, global Data Center Interconnection (DCI) services have increased sharply, and the requirements for DCI bearer networks have become more and more urgent. In accordance with the prediction of OVUM, by 2021 the global DCI equipment market will exceed 6 billion dollars, of which the proportion keeps increasing in the global optical network market.

To date, Communications Service Providers (CSPs) still take the first place in the DCI market, and Internet Content Providers (ICPs) and Carrier-Neutral Providers (CSPs) have become major buyers in the DCI market after CSPs. ICPs are expanding their data center deployment worldwide and tend to independently provide data center connections, and they have become the main driving force in the long-term development of the DCI market. Furthermore, the requirements of governments and research and education institutions also promote the development of the DCI market. From the network hierarchy perspective, the DCI development in metropolitan areas is the rapidest, and the backbone DCIs also increase greatly.

With the development of the DCI market, ICPs, CSPs, and CNPs require new optical network devices specially designed for DCIs. Such requirements of ICPs and CSPs are the most urgent. New optical network devices must have small sizes and low power consumption, support 100+ Gbps speed and standard northbound interfaces, and have open systems.

2. DCI Solution Based on the Cassette OTN Product - ZXONE 7000

The ZXONE 7000 is a new OTN product launched by ZTE. As a stackable 100G+ OTN product dedicated for DCIs, the ZXONE 7000 has many advantages, including low cost, small size, large capacity, low power consumption, intelligence, and easy deployment. The ZXONE 7000 perfectly meets the user requirements for DCI-dedicated devices. It can be used to provide concise and intelligent DCI solutions from various aspects, including user investment, system capacity, energy saving and emission reduction, and maintenance management, to satisfy the future service development requirements of data centers.

Figure 1 shows the ZXONE 7000-based DCI solution.

Figure 1 ZXONE 7000-Based DCI Solution

As shown in Figure 1, the DCI solution is implemented through the ZXONE 7000 and optical-layer transmission subracks. The ZXONE 7000 implements service access, service OTN mapping, and service encapsulation. The optical-layer transmission subracks are used to implement networking functions, DWDM multiplexing and demultiplexing, optical-layer wavelength cross-scheduling, and optical signal amplification.

As the core of the DCI solution, the ZXONE 7000 has the following highlights:

Ultra-large capacity

A single subrack has a capacity of 1.6 T, and can smoothly be upgraded to 4.8 T. The ZXONE 7000 supports access of 10GE/STM-64, 100GE/OTU4 and other services. The ZXONE 7000 is applicable to short-distance transmission within MANs and long-distance transmission within backbone networks.

Efficient heat dissipation

The device adopts the front-in-back-out ventilation mode, complying with the heat dissipation channel design in DC equipment rooms. The three fan units redundancy configuration improves reliability.

Flexible deployment

A subrack is only 2U high, and can be installed in a 19-inch data cabinet not less than 800 mm deep. Subracks can be stacked to effectively save space in the equipment room. The number of actually configured subracks is determined by the user's requirements. This design increases the device deployment agility by enabling capacity expansion with more subracks. If the deployment position changes, subracks can be moved flexibly.

Easy operation and maintenance

The equipment supports intelligent and open network architecture, and provides interfaces open to the SDON controller to support relevant control functions so that the management requirement of cross-vendor equipment can be satisfied. Subracks are managed through various methods in addition to the SDON technology, including ZTE NetNumenTM U31, Web-LCT, and northbound interface. These management and maintenance methods help greatly decrease the O&M costs and reduce the requirements for O&M personnel.

In addition, the subrack supports flexible power supply modes, including 110/220 V AC and 240/336 V HVDC. The 1+1 power board redundancy design improves equipment safety.

3. Summary

The DCI market has developed very rapidly in recent years, and has become a rapidly-growing application field in the entire optical network market and a main driving force for the revival of the optical network market. Major buyers of the DCI market urgently demand vendors to launch new DCI-dedicated optical network products.

To meet DCI requirements, ZTE has launched the stackable 100G+ OTN product-ZXONE 7000. The ZXONE 7000 has many advantages, including high integration, low power consumption, support for 100G and 100G+ systems, easy deployment, and intelligence and opening. It can perfectly satisfy the DCI-dedicated equipment requirements. The ZXONE 7000 is applicable to DCI scenarios in metropolitan area networks and DCI scenarios in backbone networks. It is the best choice for DCI bearer network construction.
