China Unicom has made its efforts to focus resources on 4G in the level of network construction to catch up with China Mobile since Wang Xiaochu became the leader of China Unicom in August 2015. On one hand, China Unicom has terminated its investment in 2G and WCDMA definitely and focused on 4G network construction; on the other hand, China Unicom and China Telecom are strengthening the collaborative construction and sharing of infrastructures and they have made great progress till now.

According to the announcement of China Unicom, LTE phase III bidding covers 469 thousand base stations in 334 cities, which includes constructing 167 thousand new base stations in 106 cities and expanding the capacities of 302 thousand base stations in 228 cities. After the construction, China Unicom will have nearly 900 thousand 4G base stations and that will greatly increase its network coverage.
