China Mobile may start TD-LTE third phase ahead of schedule

Updated:2014/9/29 09:40

When China Mobile’s chairman Xi Guohua put forward the construction of 500,000 TD-LTE base stations, and would develop 50 million 4G subscribers in this year, the industry generally held a skeptical attitude, some even thought this was an "great leap forward".

But up to this day, the achievements that China Mobile has made in TD-LTE field made all the contestants speechless. By the end of August, China Mobile has developed nearly 30 million 4G subscribers, and has basically completed the goal of 500,000 base stations. However, China Mobile is obviously not satisfied with this, according to some informed resources, it will start the third phase of the TD-LTE network project as early as the next month. The chairman of China Mobile Xi Guohua also said when reporting to the vice premier Ma Kai on the PT exhibition in this week, China Mobile will build 200,000 more base stations in this year, hopefully to complete 700,000 base stations at the end of the year.

According to the original plan, the third phase of the TD-LTE network project will start in the next year, but in the general manager working meeting at the middle of 2014, senior executives of China Mobile believe that, with the good development momentum of TD-LTE, China Mobile may start the third phase ahead of schedule. As reported, the third phase will continue to enhance the network coverage and system capacity, even some towns and villages of the eastern economically developed provinces will be taken into the 4G network coverage, making 4G available in the countryside.

As reported, in the upcoming TD-LTE third phase of construction, nearly half of the base stations will be used for the 4G network coverage in rural areas. This also marks the come true of the 4G to the countryside, and mobile broadband services begin extending to rural areas, at least TD-SCDMA network didn’t realize this dream.

From analysis of the operators’ market operating data, the growth rate of wireless data business in rural areas exceeds that in cities, in fact, the rural market has become an important part of the growth in operators ' income.

But the rural mobile broadband market is China Mobile's pain point. As everyone knows, because the 3G network of China Telecom is deploying in the low frequency band of 800MHz, which has obvious advantages in network coverage; China Unicom has also deployed UMTS900 in many areas, speeding up the popularization of WCDMA network in rural areas. China Mobile doesn’t have good solutions for the two rivals, TD-SCDMA network is difficult to continue expand in the countryside, so what can China Mobile do to maintain the huge rural customers? The reaction of China Mobile is the widely deployment of TD-LTE network, namely the direct deployment of 4G network.

With the going into countryside of China Mobile’s 4G network, it will greatly enhance its competitiveness in the rural market and restore its weakness in 3G era.
