China Mobile: Base Stations Amounts to 1.8 Million by End of 2014, with Huge Power Consumption

Updated:2014/6/26 09:31

China Mobile is the biggest operator in the world; the amount of its total base stations, the respective proportions of 2G/3G/4G/WLAN and their power consumption condition all arouse the attention of the globe.

Recently, the chief scientist of China Mobile Research Institute, Yi Zhiling expressed on 5G Testing Technology Summit that the number of China Mobile’s base stations are about 1.5 million currently and are expected to reach 1.8 million by the end of 2014. Among them, 2G base stations amount to 830,000, TD-SCDMA base stations amount to 450,000 and TD-LTE base stations are about to reach 500,000 by the end of the year. Also, China Mobile has 4.2 million WLAN AP hotspots.

Besides the well-performed coverage that the base stations bring about, huge power consumption is also a problem: 2G base stations may up to 80GWh; 13GWh for TD-SCDMA and WLAN network consumes 2GWh.

China Mobile has noticed the pressure brought by power consumption problem, thus China Mobile Research Institute has set up Green Communication Technology Research Center to provide green energy-saving solutions in mobile network process.

The demand for green power consumption has been arranged on China Mobile’s 5G development agenda. As Yi Zhiling says, China Mobile began 5G research two years ago; as for now, besides the need for some network performance, the most of all are green energy-saving performance, and software transformation from CN to RAN.
