NBN Co responds to TPG threat

Updated:2014/4/15 11:38

NBN Co has revealed its hand with regards to tackling the threat posed by TPG Telecom by bringing forward its rollout of the National Broadband Network to apartments and office buildings.

According to NBN Co, preparations are underway to aggressively deploy the NBN into high-density urban areas to combat the threat posed by cherry pickers like TPG Telecom, which announced its plans to roll out a limited fibre-to-the-basement (FTTB) network of its own in September last year, and officially launched NBN retail prices yesterday.

However with the fate of TPG’s planned network still up in the air -- pending a decision to be made by the NBN cost-benefit analysis review committee -- NBN Co has decided to expedite its own rollout plans in the areas.

NBN Co started connecting apartments in Melbourne using FTTB technology in March, with trials under way in eight high-rise buildings.

However, an NBN Co spokesman told Business Spectator that the company's rollout plans could see fibre run straight to the premises as required.

The list of initial priority areas, to be announced in the coming weeks, is expected to include Haymarket in Sydney, New Farm and Fortitude Valley in Brisbane and South Melbourne.

NBN services are scheduled to be available to these premises by the middle of the year.

NBN Co chief executive Bill Morrow said that the rollout of networks like TPG’s could limit competition at a retail level.

“Vertically-integrated carriers -- companies that both own networks and market to consumers -- cannot offer those same guarantees. A building that signs up to TPG runs the risk of being left with only one retail service provider -- TPG itself,” Mr Morrow said.
