China Mobile Chairman: Looking At M&A Opportunities In LTE, Wi-Fi Technology

Updated:2011/1/18 10:23

China Mobile Ltd. (CHL), the world's biggest mobile operator by subscribers, continues to look at acquisition opportunities abroad and is interested in areas such as Wi-Fi and long-term evolution technology, its chairman said Monday.

"We have a lot of cooperation and are in talks on some investment projects, but these haven't been announced. We are willing to participate in those seeking to auction capacity," Wang Jianzhou told reporters on the sidelines of a forum in Hong Kong.

Global telecommunications carriers are in the process of launching a fourth-generation network technology called LTE, which promises faster data download than third-generation networks. In Asia, NTT DoCoMo Inc. and Telstra Corp.'s Hong Kong unit, CSL, launched 4G services late last year. Telecom equipment vendors are also vying for contracts to supply advanced network equipment to these carriers.

Wang also said China Mobile remains in talks with Apple Inc. (AAPL) to offer the iPhone in China and hopes the two companies can reach an agreement soon.

The company is also evaluating a listing in mainland China, and plans to list the whole company, not through a special purpose vehicle, Wang said.
