A subsidiary of Chinese fixed line service and mobile telecommunication provider China Telecom, Shanghai Telecom has reportedly introduced its new E-Surfing 3G mobile payment service. The service enables subscribers to carry out mobile payments and comes with integrated mobile ordering functionality. To avail this service, E-Surfing 3G subscribers can use existing Shanghai Fu Fei Tong (FFT) payment cards or FFT accounts to recharge their mobile phone balance, pay for their Shanghai Telecom bills and carry out bill payments for other public utilities. With the mobile ordering service, the subscribers can employ SMS, web access or WAP to make appointments or purchase electronic tickets, with the costs being automatically added to their Shanghai Telecom telephone bills.
Shanghai Telecom has also announced plans to release a mobile shopping service at the end of Q3 2009, which is set to allow its subscribers to carry out POS payments in supermarkets, convenience stores and shopping malls via their mobile phones.
