Updated:2009/6/5 11:03

China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (SEHK: 0762 and NYSE: CHU) is able to lure 20 million to 30 million WCDMA users within a year after the formal debut of its WCDMA business, said the mainland telecoms operator's vice president Zhang Jun'an during his visit to Taipei.

The sales of mobile phones compatible with the company's WCDMA network is estimated to exceed the user number, as consumers are likely to change their 3G terminals, Mr. Zhang believes, disclosing that the three mainland operators plan to get 150 million 3G users in three years.

Presently, China Unicom has not planned any investment in Taiwan, but is negotiating about the reduction of WCDMA roaming fees with the four local WCDMA operators Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. (TPE: 2412), Taiwan Mobile Co., Ltd. (TPE: 3045), Far Eastone Telecommunications Co., Ltd. (TPE: 4904), and VIBO Telecom Inc.

Besides, the mainland company is cooperating with Chunghwa Telecom in three benthonic optical cable projects like the Asia Pacific Gateway.
