Chunghwa Telecom has reported a 3.6% year-on-year decline in revenues, to TWD49.1 billion (USD1.46 billion) in the three months ended 31 March 2009. Chunghwa, Taiwan’s incumbent telecoms provider, reported growth in its mobile customer base with net additions of 260,000 compared to March 2008. However, mobile revenues fell 3.1% to TWD17.6 billion in the first quarter of 2009, a loss attributed by the company to the global economic downturn and increasing market competition. EBITDA for the period fell by 10.7% year-on-year to TWD23.4 billion, due to the decrease in revenues and increasing operating expenses, which rose 1.3% to TWD35 billion.
