China Unicom, the second largest mobile telecom carrier in China, is set to set aside CNY 35.05 million to set up wireless local area network in Hubei province, CNY 22.38 of which will go to core networks.
Meanwhile, Hubei Unicom, the branch of China Unicom in the province, said that they would stop expanding its ADSL network in 2009. Instead, it will put the priority on expansion of WLAN.

Previously the company set up WLAN trial service in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei, which had a bandwidth much faster than ADSL.

For the moment, Hubei Unicom is offering WLAN service free of charge in a id to boost up the penetration of WLAN service by luring more subscribers.

Besides Hubei, China Unicom is also pushing for WLAN in other major Chinese cities around the country to compete with other telcos.
