Japan govt to warn NTT units for ads

The Japanese government plans to order the regional units of telecom giant NTT (9432.T) to halt misleading advertising for their fibre-optic network services, the Nikkei business daily reported on Wednesday. The communication's ministry has determined that some ads run by the former state-owned monopoly units gave the impression that they operated both fibre-optic and digital television services, which is not the case, the Nikkei said. The ministry also plans to ask the NTT units whether they have used NTT's customer service lines for marketing activities, which would breach rules banning the group from taking advantage of its dominant market status, the paper said. The two regional NTT units together controlled 73.4 percent of the domestic fibre-optic service market as of Sept. 30, the paper said, citing government figures.
