KPN International has teamed up with networking equipment provider Nortel to upgrade its European fibre optic network to cope with 40 gigabits per second of data, it has been reported.

Phase one of the network upgrade is now complete with KPN activating its Paris, London and Amsterdam link, according to convergedigest.com.

KPN plans to connect other key European destinations in the final quarter of this year and is also hoping to join its Netherlands and UK operations with a 208 kilometres of undersea cabling, the news provider states.

The high performance is a result of KPN using Optical Transport Network technologies from Huawei Technologies, according to the website.

According to Nortel, its next-generation technologies, which are aimed at both service providers and enterprise networks, are multimedia capable and are suitable for business-critical applications.

The company operates in more than 150 countries around the world and offers support to large and small enterprises alike.
