Hong Kong, a city of 7 million people, five mobile operators and a mobile ownership rate of 160%, is to get a new cellular network.
And it’s not even new technology. It’s an IS-95, cdma2000 network aimed at providing roaming coverage to mainland China’s 42 million CDMA users.
The network, supplied by mainland vendor Huawei Technologies, is primarily installed in the downtown areas of north Hong Kong island and lower Kowloon Peninsula.
In announcement on Thursday, November 20, the deadline for launching the network, operator PCCW said deployment would be completed by 2010.
PCCW, who also operates a W-CDMA service, won a 15-year license when it acquired 852 MHz spectrum on November 20, 2007.
