Tele2 interested in pursuing Dutch mobile licence

Tele2 Netherlands is reportedly interested in purchasing a mobile operator’s licence, Telecompaper reports citing a spokesman for the company as saying. The MVNO currently leases network capacity from KPN Mobile but apparently considers that the Dutch market lacks ‘competition and [is] ripe for a newcomer’. Tele2 Netherlands spokesman Remco Meestra went on to confirm that the company, which has around 477,000 mobile subscribers in the country, could acquire rights to mobile spectrum either from T-Mobile, which recently bought Orange Netherlands, or from KPN, which acquired fellow mobile rival Telfort. If Tele2 looks unlikely to get the spectrum at a sensible price, however, its CEO Henrik Ringmar is on record as saying he could go after spectrum in the 2.6GHz band when auctions take place in 2009.
