Lomé (Togo) ­The telephone coverage rate remains very low in Togo (4.8%) where 95.2% of the population do not have access to telephone, reliable sources told APA here.

"About 95.2% of people do not have access to telephone, and telephone coverage is particularly very low in rural areas", an official document recently of the Togolese cabinet disclosed recently.

Togo with a 56.600 sq. km. has 5 million inhabitants.

"As far as Internet connexion is concerned, 96.3% of the Togolese do not have access to it", the document reveals, indicating that the telephone coverage in the country is 4.8%.

"Togo Telecom", the historic telecommunication operator, which has the monopoly of national telephone coverage through its branch network, said it was present in 300 areas of the country.

"We are covering over 300 areas of the country and with the development of wireless fixed line telephone our network is in full extension", Abossé Akue-Kpakpo, an executive of the company said.

Apart from Togo Telecom, there are other mobile telephone operators in Togo, including "Togo Cellulaire", a state-owned company covering 150 areas in the country and its competitor "Moov", which is a branch of the Atlantic Telecom Group that is allegedly present in over 100 areas in the country.
