China Mobile to Lower Cross-strait Roaming Fees

Updated:2008/11/6 09:58

By making cooperation with Taiwan-based Chunghwa Telecom, China Mobile is scheduled to lower down the cross-strait roaming fees next year.

As for Chunghwa Telecom, it hopes to make a dent in the most profitable mobile telecom market in the mainland through the partnership with China Mobile.

China Mobile will mimic its counterparts in the Europe to cut down cross-strait roaming fees drastically.

China Mobile and Chunghwa Telecom recorded 616 million and 8.7 million mobile phone subscribers by the end of this August, respectively.

A high executive from Chunghwa Telecom says that as the frequency of visits by mainlanders to Taiwan is rising rapidly, Chunghwa Telecom will definitely take the tourism boom.

Yearly sales from roaming service of Chunghwa Telecom are merely CNY 140 million, accounting for 1% of its total revenues. The company hopes to bring the number up to 15% in the future.
