Indian state-owned operators BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) are both planning to expand their 3G networks by the start of next year.
BSNL is rolling out 3G in several north-eastern states and Chennai, and MTNL will offer 3G services in Delhi and Mumbai by December, according to India's Economic Times.
Meanwhile, a new player could be entering the Indian mobile broadband market.
According to a Reuters report, Norwegian operator Telenor is interested in acquiring a stake in Unitech Wireless.
Talks are in their final stages, but the report also states a second unnamed European operator is also interested in acquiring a stake.
Unitech Wireless holds a pan-Indian license, and parent company Unitech reportedly hopes to raise $1-2 billion for the sale of at least 40% of its subsidiary.
