A total of seven companies have submitted bids for additional GSM900 radio spectrum in Poland. The regulator announced its plans to auction two nationwide licenses in June this year. The Polish Puls Biznesu newspaper reported that all the incumbent operators have tendered bids, along with two mystery companies.

The two new bidders are Aero 2 and Arbit.

The owner of Aero 2 is Warsaw lawyer’s office Chajec, Don Siemion & Zyto - which is said to be linked with Zygmunt Solorz-Zak, the owner of Polsat TV broadcaster.

The tender guarantee amounts to PLN 200,000, and the tender closes on 23rd September 2008. Each exclusive licence will authorise use of the licensed frequencies until 31
December 2023.

Figures from the Mobile World subscriber tracker note that the country has a population penetration level of 108% and the four incumbent operators are: PTK CenterTel (33.3%), Polkomtel (32.3%), Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa (30.8%) and P4 (3.5%)
