Softbank Mobile has placed an order with fellow Japanese firm NEC Corp for the supply of an IP Multimedia Subsystem-based femtocell solution comprising femtocell gateways and access points. NEC's femtocell system will use an IMS configured with a SIP server to independently control communications from femtocells. The system framework is compatible with backbone networks migrating to IP-based networks and therefore facilitates the construction of IP networks for broadband, fixed and mobile communications. The cellco aims to have IMS-based femtocell systems ready for full commercial launch in January 2009.
