China Mobile Listed Company to Operate TD-SCDMA

Updated:2008/9/3 15:02

At a media conference called by China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) last week, company president Wang Jianzhou stated his company's intent to adjust the way it operates its TD-SCDMA networks to bring it into line with how it operates its 2G network. Specifically, the core network and support systems will belong to its Hong Kong listed subsidiary China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), who will then lease CMCC-built 3G wireless network infrastructure in a lease-to-operate arrangement. China Mobile's TD-SCDMA trial network is currently being run entirely by CMCC, but as TD-SCDMA deployment moves into the second stage, it would have been too difficult to continue to keep the 2G and 3G networks separate.

China Mobile's TD-SCDMA network is currently a completely stand-alone network. The second round of development will expand the network into 28 new cities, and connect it to the company's existing 2G network, so that both networks use the same business services, support networks and core systems.
