SK Telecom signed an MOU with National Development and Reform Commission of China (NDRC), and the city of Shenzhen for the cooperation in the national project of high technology development. The national project of high-tech development is aimed at the construction of a city integrating Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau, and using new technologies in a wide range of areas such as IT innovation, information, new & renewable energy and bio industries. SK Telecom will participate in the IT innovation infra construction in Shenzhen and other SK group affiliates will join the project later. In particular, the Korean mobile carrier will cooperate with the Chinese partners in technology sector for the development of RFID, next-generation communications technologies and supplementary services; in IT sector for boosting industrialization and supporting TD-SCDMA; in urban information sector for construction of a payment system using RFID/USN and smartcard; IT technology exchange between Korea and China, and education, according to SK Telecom. The cooperation in the city construction is the second project of strategic importance that SK Telecom runs with the NDRC after the TD-SCDMA development. SK Telecom expects the city construction project will consolidate the cooperation with the Chinese government, which will draw support for the company’s business in China and open up a great opportunity for telematics and convergence that the company is presently working on. The participation in the project is the first outcome of the agreement on the mutual cooperation in telecommunications made during the Korea-China summit in May. The two countries announced a joint statement promising full support for further cooperation in resources and technologies between telecom companies of the two countries and efforts for expanding partnership in electronics and communications into software and RFID.
