Ukraine¨s 3G auction this year?

Ukraine’s National Commission on Communications Regulation (NCCR) has released a draft resolution calling for the country’s armed forces to accelerate the process of freeing up 2100MHz band wireless frequencies for commercial 3G mobile services. According to the regulator, if the process of spectrum conversion is speeded up it may be ready to launch an auction for UMTS licences in October or November this year. The NCCR has proposed that the Ministry of Defence submits a conversion schedule including a cost valuation by 10 September 2008. State-run Ukrtelecom is currently the only UMTS frequency holder in the country, and launched commercial W-CDMA/HSDPA mobile services last November, according to TeleGeography's GlobalComms database.
