Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications (RCom) is gearing up to launch its 3G (third generation) telecom services within three to six months of the completion of the auction process.
Its 3G rollout will begin on the GSM (global systems for mobile communications) network.
It is learnt that the company is in the process of floating a $500-million global tender for 3G launch. While this tender is expected to be for about 12 million to 15 million lines, the company would undertake subsequent rollout of 3G services in phases, sources said.
RCom expects to cover 50 top cities initially, and on completion the company’s 3G network would go for a pan-India rollout, it is learnt.
The decision to float a global tender for RCom’s 3G services is believed to have been taken over the weekend.
The tender document is likely to be sent to leading equipment vendors in the next four days.
It would cover supply of equipment and servicing for commissioning of the 3G network.
Among the vendors who are in talks with RCom are Huawei, ZTE, Alcatel Lucent, Nokia Siemens and Ericsson.
