Globacom Appoints Group COO for Glo Mobile
Updated:2008/7/7 10:13
Africa's fastest growing telecommunications company, Globacom, has announced the appointment of Mr. Mohamed Jameel as the Group Chief Operating Officer for Glo Mobile. A statement from the office of the Chairman of Globacom, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jnr., said with the new appointment, Mr. Jameel would head Glo Mobile operations in Nigeria and on the international scene, where the company is boldly registering its presence. Until his new appointment, Mr. Jameel was the acting Chief Operating Officer of Globacom Limited. As acting COO of Globacom, he was part of the management team that activated the vision of the company Board to deliver innovative and world class telecommunications services to Nigerians at affordable rates. He joined Globacom in 2003 and was first appointed General Manager, Glofixed, before he was moved to Sales also as GM. With the guidance of the company Board, Mr Jameel lived up to the challenge by executing an efficient sales structure which contributed in making Glo a runaway success. His creditable acquittal of himself as GM, Sales, led to his appointment as acting COO of Globacom, the statement said. In his reaction, Mr. Jameel said the vision and total commitment of Globacom's Board to excellence, greatly inspired him. He promised to discharge himself creditably in his new assignment in order to justify the huge confidence the Globacom Board has reposed in him. Globacom, which is building Africa's biggest and best telecommunications network, recently won a GSM licence in Ghana shortly after rolling out its GSM service in Republic of Benin. Globacom is building Africa first private submarine cable from Nigeria through other African countries to UK and the US. It is also respected for its innovations, having pioneered the introduction into the Nigerian market of various products and services such as 3G, Blackberry, Mobile Internet, Vehicle Tracking, Multimedia Messaging Service, Voice SMS, Text to Email, Mobile Banking and Per Second Billing. Globacom also crashed the cost of SIM acquisition from about N30,000 (about $252) to almost zero and was credited by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in a 2004 report for leading the revolution that made telecoms available and accessible to Nigerians in general.
