France Telecom CEO: Could Walk Away From TeliaSonera Deal

Updated:2008/6/6 11:42

France Telecom could walk away from a deal for Nordic operator TeliaSonera and has alternative options, Chief Executive Didier Lombard said Thursday.

Any deal must have the support of TeliaSonera's board, Lombard told a conference call with reporters, adding that a hostile offer would not be feasible.

France Telecom is "very comfortable" with TeliaSonera's two largest shareholders, the Swedish and Finnish governments, Lombard said.

The French telecommunications giant is not aware of any rival bids for TeliaSonera, Chief Financial Officer Gervais Pellissier said.

France Telecom said Thursday it had approached TeliaSonera's board with a cash-and-share indicative offer, valuing the company at around SEK252 billion, or $42 billion, according to a Dow Jones Newswires calculation.

However, TeliaSonera's board rejected the offer, saying it undervalued the company. Lombard said there are still 15 days of negotiations remaining between the two companies.
