Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) on June 22 announced it is sponsoring the Wikimedia Foundation, the parent organization of Wikipedia, with NT$3 million (US$91,000) to hold Wikimania 2007, the third International Wikimedia Conference, in Taipei from August 3-5.
The conference will bring together international users from various Wikimedia projects as well as individuals interested in learning about
Wiki technology, free content and knowledge, educational and social trends in the Internet culture, according to Wikimedia''s website. Jimmy Wales and Florence Nibart-Devouard, the founder and chairwoman, respectively of the organization, will be attending the conference.
Taipei beat seven competing cities, including London, Istanbul, Hong Kong and Singapore, to host Wikimania 2007, mainly due to the sponsorship by CHT. The first Wikimania took place in Frankfurt, Germany and the second one was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the US.
