BSNL will reportedly invite bids for 8 million Digital Subscribers Lines (
DSL). Some of the major players including names such as Alcatel, Lucent,
Nokia Siemens, Ericsson, ZTE, Huawei have expressed their interest in participating in the bids.
BSNL wants the modems capable of offering services like
IPTV, Internet telephony and Video-on-demand. For enterprise customers, the PSU wants the modems to support Virtual Private Network over
broadband. The modems should also to be
Wi-Fi enabled.
The technical terms of the tender will reportedly be framed after consulting popular chip manufacturing companies about the latest developments in the filed of DSL.
The PSU after witnessing a fall in landline subscriber base and marginal fall in mobile services is now gearing up to leverage the surge in demand for broadband services.
It has set a target of 20 million broadband subscribers by 2010.
