Updated:2008/5/8 14:31

China Mobile Communications Corp., parent of the world''s most valuable phone company, is ``interested'''' in making investments in Africa, President Wang Jianzhou said.

The carrier hasn''t made a bid for South Africa''s MTN Group Ltd., Wang said in Hong Kong today after the shareholder meeting of China Mobile Ltd. MTN, Africa''s largest wireless company, said May 5 it''s in exploratory talks with India''s Bharti Airtel Ltd.

The Chinese company has invested 14.2 billion yuan ($2 billion) on a high-speed mobile-phone network, Wang said. He was referring to third-generation services, which allows users to video conference and offers quicker downloads from the Internet.

China Mobile Communications owns 74.3 percent of Hong Kong- listed China Mobile. China Mobile, with 392.1 million customers at the end of March, is the world''s biggest phone company by users.
