ONAP First Release to Come in November

Updated:2017/10/9 15:01

The first release of ONAP(Open Network Automation Platform) Project, created in part by AT&T and China Mobile, will be in November, supportive of three  scenarios, Yang Zhiqiang, president of China Mobile Research Institute said at China SDN/NFV Industry Development Conference 2017 during PT Expo China.

Ms. Yang noted ONAP has caused a strong reaction in the industry since its establishment in February, having over 50 members by far which cover more than 50 percent of the global mobile users. ONAP is supposed to be the foundation of the automation and intelligence of the future network.

The forces that swiftly drive operator network transformation, according to Ms. Yang, consist of three aspects:

The revenue brought by data traffic services has exceeded that of voice services, and over 60 percent of the former is video services. Operators face with the challenges of meeting the growing services with lowering cost.

The Internet of Things has diverse special demands on connection properties, such as low latency and high reliability.

Operators should offer more digital contents to achieve the digital transformation; and they will face different kinds of service objects including users and developers to construct an ecosphere together.

The traditional network architecture can't meet the needs above which make the carriers service mode change, Ms Yang said.
