MIIT: China¡¯s Mobile Data Traffic Doubled At Lunar New Year

Updated:2017/2/8 16:04

MIIT released the communication data during the Spring Festival period - from January 27 to February 2, which shows doubled data traffic consumption and drop in both SMS and voice calls.

Chinese become used to sending and snatching red envelopes on WeChat with high penetration in 4G mobile phones to celebrate the new year of 2017.

The persistent mobile Internet data traffic reached 259.01 million G, twice that in 2016, during Lunar New Year, which increased 88.4% year-on-year to 35.98 million G on New Year's Eve and hit 39.9 million G on the first day of the New Year, remaining high.

Otherwise, the SMS volume has declined by 16.9% to 11.6 billion and the duration of calls on mobile phone reduced 11.8% to 64.7 billion minutes in China.

The SMS decline happens not only during this Chinese New Year celebration but also on usual days. China's major carriers will be facing competitions over data flow operation in the future, which has become the focus instead of voice calls and SMS for them.
