Both the registration of new PHS users and expansion of the PHS network were discontinued on February 13, reports Legal Mirror citing notices issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The ministry previously ordered telecom operators to cancel the wireless telephone service, also known as Xiaolingtong, by the end of 2011. China had nearly 69 million PHS users by the end of 2008.
