CMT approves commercial launch for Telefonica FTTH network
Updated:2008/11/19 13:24
According to IPTV News, the Spanish telecoms regulator, the Telecommunications Market Commission (CMT), has announced that it will now allow Telefonica to launch commercial services over its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network. The decision comes after it was recently revealed that the CMT had temporarily suspended the telco’s right to launch services following a complaint from rival Orange that alleged wholesale access terms for the network had not been finalised. It is understood that this latest ruling notes that Telefonica will not be forced to share network capacity, but must share information on the physical layout so that rivals can install their own infrastructure, and it must also process requests from other operators for wholesale access. The regulator also noted that Telefonica had provided the necessary information regarding its plans for increasing network coverage by 2010. The new network, which is capable of speeds up to 100Mbps, reportedly serves 54,000 triple-play customers in Madrid and Barcelona as part of its initial testing phase, and Telefonica is believed to have targeted 1,000 FTTH sign-ups by the end of 2008.
