KT completes LTE rollout to 84 cities

Updated:2012/4/24 13:28

South Korean communications firm KT has completed the nationwide rollout of its LTE network, covering 84 cities. Despite entering the LTE market later than rivals LG Uplus and SK Telecom, KT is convinced that its 'Warp' technology will help boost market share.

"We have developed our own technology to offer better service to LTE users, many of them being data-guzzlers. We will regain our market presence soon," the Korea Herald quotes Pyo Hyun-myung, president of the mobile business unit at KT, as saying.

KT's Warp technology has a special head server that controls data traffic among 144 radio coverage areas. KT said it will offer LTE services across the whole country, covering smaller counties within the first half of this year and the operator targets 4 million LTE subscribers in this year.

The company currently has around 500,000 LTE users, compared to 2.25 million for SK Telecom and 1.5 million for LG Uplus. Pyo also flagged the launch of voice over LTE services, which could be launched as early as October when handset makers are expected to roll out phones exclusively for VoLTE.
