Telcel starts LTE tests, to launch LTE network in 2012

Mexican mobile operator Telcel, a unit of America Movil, has rolled out LTE tests at its headquarters in Plaza Carso, Federal District. Telcel plans to commercially launch its LTE network in 2012, local newspaper Reforma reports, citing Marco Quatorze, Telcel's value-added services director.

As part of its LTE mobile network trial, Telcel reached speeds ranging between 50 Mbps and 96 Mbps. According to Quatorze, as soon as the LTE network is operational, users will be able to access mobile internet services at constant speeds of 10 Mbps.

Additionally, Quatorze said that also in 2012 Telcel plans to introduce Wimax technology. Telcel currently has around 17 million subscribers in Mexico. The operator plans to double its data service subscriber base in 2012.
